We can help you make good economic choices, avoid harmful debt and predatory lenders, gain wealth and the dream of homeownership, access income support, and develop educational, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. We have become a leader in workforce development and adult literacy services.

All our services are free for eligible individuals and families. Southwest Economic Solutions was formerly known as the Housing Opportunity Center (HOC) and was part of Southwest Housing Solutions until 2013.

The mission of Southwest Economic Solutions (SWES) is to provide opportunities for individuals and families to achieve greater economic success. We promote and preserve homeownership and advance financial literacy, and have become a leader in workforce development and adult literacy services. All our services are free or low-cost for eligible individuals and families.

Real Estate Development

Southwest Solutions is a nationally recognized leader in the planning and implementing of a comprehensive and innovative neighborhood revitalization strategy. This strategy involves rehabilitating buildings to provide hundreds of affordable and supportive housing units, eliminating blight, building new construction, promoting homeownership, and creating and leasing space for commercial, cultural and community use.

Small Business

ProsperUS Detroit, which began its own nonprofit organization in 2020, helps aspiring small business owners obtain entrepreneurial training and possible financing to operate their businesses in Detroit neighborhoods. We also offer affordable and quality commercial space in high-traffic commercial corridors in southwest Detroit.

Workforce Development

Southwest Solutions offers a variety of workforce development programs to help individuals acquire the education, skills, training, and job opportunities to secure sustainable employment. These programs are designed to address the particular needs and barriers of the individuals seeking work and greater economic security and success.

Career Center

The Detroit At Work Career Centers are a free resource for Detroit residents looking to start a new career or improve their career prospects. The Career Centers match workers with training programs and job opportunities. There are multiple Career Centers in the city. Ours is conveniently located in southwest Detroit. Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC) oversees the Career Centers.

Center for Working Families

Our Center for Working Families (CWF) is based on a promising national concept and is designed to help low-income families reach financial stability, access income supports, develop educational and employment opportunities, build wealth, and move up the economic ladder. 

Supported Employment

Supported Employment Services (SES) is designed to help people with severe and persistent mental illness find work at employment opportunities that they choose and for which they are qualified. The foundation of the program is that work can promote recovery and wellness.

Youth Programs

Provides job training and educational opportunities for at-risk youth ages 16-24 who have previously fropped out of high school. 

Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program (HVRP)

HVRP helps homeless vets find meaningful employment so that they can be productive members of the community.

Earn + Learn

Earn + Learn is an innovative and comprehensive model of workforce development that helps individuals in the Detroit area participate in training opportunities. Many have gained long-term employment.
